Advice on how to deal with the boss
It has been written tons of advice on how to deal with your boss. In most cases one focus on a "bad" boss - one that hold you back. Following advice should be applied to all kinds of bosses. Having the right relationship with your boss will boost your career to new heights sooner or later.
Be positive
First of all, you need to be a solver - let the others around you complain. Complaining always hurts the image of being pro-active and to be honest there are no top managers that are famous for being "complainers". Some people actually use thier superior as a counselor which is bizarre since one never get PAID to go to your therapist.
Keeping it simple
Basically all top executives, in the smallest as well as largest companies in the world have one thing in common, they are good at simplyfing things. You can call it being a generalist or having a great helicopter view but it all comes down to filtering information and create an output which is ... simple. So with all this in mind, the boss will love having people feeding him/her with simpleness. Make thier world easy and they will adore you.
The struggle
Yes, executives love peple with integrity and id?as. However, they do not like those who struggle TOO much and never show flexibility. In the end you should never challenge your boss. So, choose your battles, keep a low profile now and then, it ads power to your struggles when it's really important.
Friends or not
Slowly put a "pal" touch to your conversations and e-mailing, irony always work good. Having an informal relationship signals control. However, don't bring it too far, only crazy people do. Another way of looking at it is how you act when you meet a new friend. Few people act the same way in the beginning as when they have known each others for some time. Keep the relationship with your boss the same as the first time with the new friend.
Even though you get more and more friendly with your boss, avoid bringing up personal problems and issues - they have enought with it themselves. Very important; never be emotional. Yes, it is the 21st century, but it still is considered a weakness.
The trust thing
Trust takes time to build, but is erased in a split second. Avoid stupid risks like copying too much private things on the colorcopy machine, call home on the company celluar when you are on vacation in Thailand and so on. If you have to do private things (like going to a job interview), make sure you have a good excuse. Going to the dentist is a good one - tough to check. But, it only works once or twice a year (if you don't have really bad teeth ofcourse!).
Do not surf too much private things on the web - sooner or later the creepy guy at the IT department run a log of your activity and run to your boss with the dirty details. The fact is that everybody do it now and then, but noone likes to know it.
Be the fresh wind
Finally, be creative and slightly different. Your boss loves people who bring something new, and hate those who go too far. You have to position yourself inbetween.
